Both to conserve bandwidth and to preserve the rights of those who graciously contribute their visual art for publication in Lion & Serpent, we heavily compress the images we distribute in the journal's PDF edition. To illustrate the difference that this makes in image quality between the two editions, here is an enlarged section of an the image on issue 14:4. The one on the left is the version embedded into the PDF version, and the image on the right is the source matter we use for the printed paper edition. Enlarged in this manner, one can see the obvious differences between the two versions. The PDF version is degraded with low resolution and compression artifacts. The print version remains crisply detailed.

Simply printing out the PDF we distribute online is not going to get you anything like we produce for the paper edition that we create.
